GET RID OF THE FOREIGN GODS (Gen 35:2)
It is no news anymore that without true repentance, man has been unable to figure out the message of Christ for his salvation. It is pertinent that we rise and return to our master and saviour Jesus Christ in other words, Get rid of foreign gods. God said unto Jacob, Arise, go up to Bethel, and dwell there: and make there an altar unto God, that appeared unto thee when thou fleddest from the face of Esau thy brother.
Today the lord is calling us back to Bethel. Where is Bethel? The city of God. We have to realize that God is the ultimate and without Him, our salvation is not guaranteed for He is the saviour Himself.
Now when Jacob heard the Lord, Then Jacob said unto his household, and to all that were with him, get rid of the foreign gods that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments: The keywords here are underlined. “ get rid of the foreign gods”.
Here we ask ourselves few questions like; What is “Strange”? It simply means “unfamiliar”. Why did Jacob call it strange? This is because the Lord God Almighty (Gen 17:1) is the shepherd of Isreal from the time of Abraham. (Gen 24:27) so, any other God is unfamiliar and hence strange.
These foreign gods are numerous and depend on the point and the time we are. They could be lies, betrayals backbiting, a campaign of calumny, and as many as mentioned by St. Paul “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. (Gal 5:19-21).
All these things are what Jacob said unto his household, and to all that were with him, cast them out and be clean and Paul reiterated it and said “as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God”.
Brethren, if we can actually turn away from these things and answer the call of Christ as revealed by Isaiah, Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins are as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. (Is 1:18) we shall be saved. Praise God!!!
